Today, the Zagreb Pencil Factory is located at Poljačka Street 56 in Zagreb.
The company was founded in 1937 under the name L. L. C. Hardmuth, Koh-i-Noor, and was initially situated in newly built facilities at today’s Prilaz baruna Filipovića 91. It produced wooden pencils and pastels. In the 1950s, its product range expanded to include erasers, chalk, charcoal, fountain pens, ballpoint pens, writing kits, mechanical pencils, brushes, etc. In 1952, the company was renamed Grafos – Zagreb Pencil Factory.
In 1961, it was renamed Stilos and, a few months later, ‘Tvornica olovaka Zagreb’ (Zagreb Pencil Factory) or TOZ, the pencil, fountain pen, office drawing and writing tool factory. In the mid-1960s, production transitioned from artisanal to industrial.
In 1970, the company moved to a new factory on Poljačka Street. In the 1970s and 1980s, TOZ was one of Zagreb’s most significant factories.
Since 2001, the factory has been called TOZ Penkala, Zagreb Pencil Factory.
