Pharmaceutical Product Packaging

The oldest pharmacy in Zagreb, the uptown pharmacy K crnom orlu (‘the Black Eagle’), was first mentioned in the 14th century and still exists today at the same location on Kamenita Street 9. The pharmacy K sv. Mariji (‘To St. Mary’s’) in the Kaptol district operated from the late 16th century until 1949 across several locations: Opatovina, Ban Jelačić Square, and Dolac.

The city's development at the turn of the 20th century is closely linked to the construction of Zagreb’s pharmacies, which were often placed at prominent corners of palatial buildings. By 1934, Zagreb had a total of 30 pharmacies, marking a significant expansion of the pharmaceutical network. Among the busiest and most lavishly designed pharmacies was K Zrinjskomu (Zrinjevac 20), alongside other well-known ones such as the Kolodvorska pharmacy (King Tomislav Square 13), Ljekarna K Sv. Trojstvu (Ilica 43), and the pharmacy Crvenom križu (Ilica 79).

Preserved packaging serves as valuable evidence of the diversity in pharmaceutical business operations. Pharmacists developed an advertising network for their products, showcasing the production of both medicinal and cosmetic products. Pharmacies offered a variety of medicinal products, including ointments, as well as hygiene and body care items. Promotional materials were created in the spirit of the time, frequently incorporating drawings.
