Zagreb Tobacco Industry
Zagreb, Ciglana 1 (now Klaićeva)
The factory began operation in 1869 in the building of the present-day University Rectorate in Zagreb. It immediately employed about 400 women workers, but the number rapidly grew to 600. In 1882 the factory was moved to a new building in Klaićeva Street where it remains until 2007. After 1918 the factory was nationalised. Zagreb Tobacco Industry was founded by a government of the FNRJ (Federative National Republic of Yugoslavia) decree in October 1946. This largest tobacco industry in the country was the first to pack cigarettes in hard packets. From September 1998, Zagreb Tobacco Industry shareholding operates as part of the Rovinj Tobacco Industry shareholding.
